Back in 2014, surf photographer JJ Wessels captured this image off the coast of Huntington Beach — a surfer carving a wave in the foreground, Platform Emmy standing on the horizon. JJ's wife has been lifelong friends with my wife, and I first met them at our wedding. JJ is an amazing photographer and an even better human being.

I had this photo bookmarked on Instagram for almost eight years before I realized why I was so drawn to it. The answer, it turned out, was right there on the horizon. That platform isn't just a backdrop — it's a symbol of the energy industry that touches every aspect of my life. The ocean, the surf, the rig: it all came together in a single frame in a way I couldn't look away from.
